On the outside Extra Space Storage on Arrow Highway presents a stylish, aesthetically pleasing exterior. The obvious attention to detail and design continues throughout the facility.
James Goodman, with James Goodman Architecture, said "the primary design challenge was developing the architectural character for the project that met the City of Montclair's design expectations for the site." Initially, the local jurisdiction was not pleased with the prospect of a large self-storage facility in this area of the City. Working with the City's planning director, the design team arrived at a solution enthusiastically supported by City officials and that met the financial and marketing goals of Storage Specialists, LLC. The tight site demanded a highly efficient self-storage layout and intensive site planning.
Through innovated and cost-effective construction materials and methods MST Constructors, Inc. beautifully executed the design. "The project really went as smoothly as it could have," said Donnie Gerault, VicePresident of MST Constructors. The central building is a three story building housing climate controlled self storage units. Surrounding its perimeter are single story, fortress-style units. The configuration rightly suits the demographics and storage needs of the immediate community as seen by the 10% occupancy within one month of opening its doors. MST incorporated inexpensive, highly functional CMU units with stucco and glass to maintain the sleek, attractive design. As single insulated panels with concealed fasteners, the API architectural panels provide quality finishes both in the interior and exterior while giving the structure energy efficiency through high R values.
The theme of this project, from concept to opening day, was balance. Clear communication, creative design and quality construction practices, achieved the perfectly balanced storage facility in form, function and, most importantly, long-term profitability.
